For completion of the Ph.D degree, the student must complete a total of 78 credit hours beyond the four-year university degree.
Candidates with a MS degree from SZABIST or a MA/ MS/ MBA/ M.Phil (with minimum 5 years of formal university education) from a recognized university may be given a maximum transfer of 30 credits towards the Ph.D degree at SZABIST. A minimum of 6 credit hours of Independent Study must be completed. The students may be required to take additional courses as recommended by the Graduate Committee. The student must complete 48 credit hours at SZABIST

For candidate with a MS degree (minimum 5 years) from a HEC recognized university (with a minimum of 8 SZABIST equivalent courses), a minimum of 18 credit hours of course work as defined above must be completed.
For candidates with a MS degree (minimum 5 years) from a HEC recognized university (less than 8 SZABIST equivalent courses), a minimum of 24 credit hours as defined above must be completed.
The Independent Study can be taken concurrently. Dissertation cannot be taken during the first year of registration as Ph.D candidate, except for candidates with a SZABIST MS degree.
Full-time residency requirement for the MS / Ph.D Program is a minimum of one year during which the student must enroll for 30 credits (12 credits each during the semester and 6 during the summer). |
Ph.D Qualifying Examination
All Ph.D students must pass the Ph.D Qualifying Examination within the first year of their Ph.D studies. Ph.D Qualifying Examination will constitute the Ph.D research proposal, which must be presented before the Doctoral Committee. The Ph.D Coordinator may invite other experts in the field to the Ph.D Qualifying Examination. For SZABIST MS candidates pursuing a Ph.D degree at SZABIST, an extension of MS thesis work may constitute the Ph.D research proposal.
Dissertation
A student who has successfully passed the Ph.D Qualifying Examination will be formally accepted as a doctoral candidate.
Normally, a student may register for 12 dissertation credits during the regular semesters and 6 dissertation credits during the summer during his/her doctoral studies. Continuous registration of dissertation (minimum 3 credits) is required to graduate.
The dissertation may normally be completed in two years beyond the MA / MS / MBA / M.Phil degree (with minimum 5 years of formal university education).
Ph.D Comprehensive Exam
All Ph.D candidates must pass the Ph.D Comprehensive Exam at the end of one year of doctoral research. Ph.D Comprehensive Examination will constitute satisfactory progress and successful presentation of preliminary doctoral research conducted during the first year of doctoral studies.
The Ph.D Comprehensive Examination will be conducted by the Doctoral Committee. The Ph.D Coordinator may invite other experts in the field to the Ph.D Comprehensive Exam.
Publication Requirement
All Ph.D candidates are required to write a paper and submit it for publication in a refereed archival journal approved by the Doctoral Committee. This paper must be at least provisionally accepted by the journal before the presentation of the Final Seminar. It is normally expected that this paper will be submitted at the end of first year but not later than two years of doctoral research.
Final Seminar
At the end of successful completion of doctoral research and fulfillment of publication requirement, the candidates will be asked to present a Final Seminar to the Doctoral Committee. The Ph.D Coordinator may invite other experts in the field to the Final Seminar.
With the approval of the Final Seminar by the Doctoral Committee, the candidate will be asked by the Doctoral Committee to present the draft of the Ph.D Dissertation in SZABIST format to the Doctoral Committee.
Ph.D Final Examination
After approval of the Ph.D Dissertation draft by the Doctoral Committee, the Ph.D dissertation draft will be sent to an External Examiner (Outside Reader), to be selected by the Doctoral Committee, for approval. With the approval of the Ph.D dissertation by the External Examiner, the candidate will be asked to appear for his Ph.D Final Examination by making a formal presentation of his Ph.D Dissertation to the Doctoral Committee. The Ph.D Coordinator may invite the External Examiner and other experts in the field to the Final Examination.
The minimum period for the award of a Ph.D degree is two years from acceptance into the Ph.D program and three years from acceptance into the MS Program. The maximum period for the submission of the Ph.D dissertation is five years from acceptance into the Ph.D Program and seven years from acceptance into the MS Program.
