Media Sciences students of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST), in collaboration with Provincial Ministry of Culture and Tourism, organised a Sindhi cultural and youth night. This is the second amongst the series of shows organised by the SZABIST; the first one was the Student Film Festival that took place earlier this year. The Sindhi cultural night started with a two-hour delay as the chief guest, Provincial Minister for Culture and Tourism Sassi Palejo, arrived late due to prior engagements.
The show started at around 9:00 pm with an introductory speech by Daniyal Ali Khan, Coordinator Media Sciences SZABIST who then invited Ms Sassi Palejo Sindh Minister for Culture & Tourism on the stage.
The minister was of the opinion that more shows like the Sindhi cultural and youth night should be organised to provoke the understanding of their culture and history. The first performance was known as Sufism in which the students were dressed as Sufi singers and were miming Sindhi folk songs. Next came the fashion show; this was something that everyone was waiting for.
The show was choreographed by Ihtesham Ansari, a textile fashion stylist who is a graduate from Indus Valley. He succeeded in portraying a good amalgamation of contemporary Sindhi Ajraks with western clothing.
The last performance was by a band from National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA) called Taal Karizma and they literally brought the whole crowd to their feet.
Fahad Ali Shah, a participant of the show, told The News that initial rundown of the show also included an on stage adaptation of the Sindhi folklore “Omar Marvi” but it was called off at the last minute due to technical problems.
